EXPanding Receptive and Expressive Skills through Stories (EXPRESS): Language Formulation in Children with Selective Mutism and Other Communication Needs is a resource that provides a treatment approach for speech-language pathologists, teachers, psychologists, parents, and others working with children with selective mutism and other language delays or disorders such as language learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, or for children learning English as a second language. It is a program for expanding receptive and expressive language skills with five levels of communication to accommodate children from nonvocal stages through spontaneous vocalization.

The EXPRESS approach includes activity modules corresponding to classic children's stories. Children's literature is used as a flexible and adaptable tool for presenting activities designed to help expand vocabulary and grammar, engage in question-answer routines, improve sentence formulation, and generate narrative language. Creativity and imagination are also fostered using sentence formulation and story generation. EXPRESS supports the Common Core State Standards for English and Language Arts.

Each of the modules requires the corresponding storybook that can be obtained individually or found within The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury, a compendium that includes all the stories.

EXPRESS also includes forms to help the clinician monitor progress and a PluralPlus companion website with video links to the stories and downloadable items from the book such as activity cards and scoring sheets.

EXPRESS requires the use of classic children's stories to complete the activity modules. The stories can be obtained individually, through an inclusive compendium, or through online videos.

Evelyn R. Klein

Evelyn R. Klein, PhD, CCC-SLP, BSC-CL, is a full professor at La Salle University in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders where she teaches, supervises, and advises students pursuing degrees in speech-language pathology. She holds professional licensures as a speech-language pathologist and psychologist. Her post-doctoral fellow- ship is in clinical neuropsychology from Drexel University. Dr. Klein is an ASHA Fellow and was awarded the Clinical Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is a recipient of the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award and the Distinguished Faculty Scholarship Award from La Salle University. Dr. Klein has worked as an SLP in outpatient rehabilitation, home care, and private practice and currently supervises graduate students in community clinics, medical facilities, and schools. At La Salle University, she has been instrumental in co-developing the CASTLE Center. She also taught the acquired language disorders course for 15 years. Dr. Klein is published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, text- books, and treatment manuals. She is a co-author of the new Acquired Language Disorders: A Case-Based Approach (4th edition); ECHO: A Vocal Language Program for Easing Anxiety in Conversation; More Than Fluency: The Social, Emotional, and Cognitive Dimensions of Stuttering; EXPRESS (Expanding Receptive and Expressive Skills through Stories): Language Formulation for Children With Selective Mutism and Other Communication Needs; Focus on Function; and Focus on Transition for adults with acquired language disorders. Sharon Lee Armstrong, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of PsyD Research & Dissertations at La Salle University, Associate Faculty Member at Rutgers University Center for Cognitive Science, and Research Consultant at Selective Mutism Research Institute. Her specializations within Cognitive Science are psycholinguistics, language development, concepts / categorization / semantics, reasoning, decision making, and metacognition, which she has investigated in selective mutism, autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, aphasia, and depression. She belongs to the Psychonomic Society, Association for Psychological Science (APS), APA Divisions of Experimental Psychology and Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology, Selective Mutism Association (SMA), and Society for Philosophy & Psychology. She presents at national conferences (e.g., the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Anxiety and Depression Association of America, APS, and SMA). Janice Gordon

Janice Gordon, MS, CCC-SLP, is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist in private practice. Janice obtained her Master of Science from La Salle University where she was a graduate research assistant and recipient of the Graduate Achievement Award in 2013. Her clinical practice has included assessment and treatment of preschool children with communication disorders in Bucks County, PA and conducting research at the Selective Mutism Anxiety and Related Disorders Treatment (SMart) Center. She presents at national and regional conventions including the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association, SMart Center's Beyond the Basics Conference, and at the Selective Mutism Association's annual convention. Janice is published in Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry on the topic of treatment for selective mutism and is a co-author of the new publication EXPanding Receptive and Expressive Skills through Stories (EXPRESS): Language Formulation in Children with Selective Mutism and Other Communication Needs. Donna Spillman Kennedy, MS, CCC-SLP, is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist who has dedicated her career to helping individuals with speech and language disorders communicate effectively. She provides a range of assessment and treatment services to clients across the lifespan through Integrated Speech Pathology, LLC where she is a partner. Donna has been an Adjunct Professor at Kean University for 25 years having taught lecture classes and supervised clinic. Areas of specialization include augmentative and alternative communication and selective mutism. Carolyn Gerber Satko, MS, CCC-SLP, is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist in a highly diverse, urban school district in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She provides speech and language therapy services for students at the elementary level and evaluates students transitioning into a school-age program from early intervention. Mrs. Satko attended Bloomsburg University to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Audiology/Speech-Language Pathology with a Minor in Special Education through the Department of Exceptionalities Program. She continued her education at La Salle University to obtain a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Elisa Shipon-Blum, DO, is the President and Director of the Selective Mutism Anxiety and Related Disorders and Treatment Center (SMart Center) located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is director of the Selective Mutism Research Institute (SMRI), which is a foundation started to study her theories and treatment methodologies on Selective Mutism. Dr. Shipon-Blum is the Founder and Director Emeritus of the Selective Mutism Association (SMA) and the Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology and Family Medicine at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
