CHARGE syndrome occurs in approximately 1:10,000–15,000 births worldwide, is extremely complex, and has varied medical and physical manifestations. It was first described in 1979, named in 1981, and in 2004 a gene for CHARGE was identified. In addition to a host of other conditions, most individuals have communication-related problems, including hearing, vision, balance, breathing, swallowing, and speech.

Each of the editors is an established expert on CHARGE syndrome and has received the highest award bestowed by the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation, the Stars in CHARGE.  They represent three different disciplines: psychology, genetic counseling, and clinical pediatrics. Additional information and studies on CHARGE have advanced to the degree that warrant a second edition of this book. As in the first edition, this book describes the sensory, physical, communicative, and behavioral findings in CHARGE. Authors include experts in the field, including a number from the CHARGE Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Reviews

“Throughout the book the emphasis is on the challenge of ensuring communication and normal development in children who can have deficits in all their senses. As survival has dramatically improved, this has become fundamental to care and just what can be achieved is demonstrated in later chapters. There are chapters on the cardiovascular, visual, gastrointestinal and endocrine problems of the syndrome of less relevance to readers of our specialty. ...The second half of the book relates to Developmental Issues, Language and Communication Systems and Psychological Issues, taking the child from birth to adulthood. This second edition has been well updated to judge by the references cited and is of great value to the multidisciplinary team essential for social development. The book reminds us that “all behaviour is communication” and stresses this throughout. It will appeal to the paediatric otolaryngologist, to the speech and language therapist but especially to the trainee in ENT. This is a very thought-provoking read, but be sure not to miss the introductory pages!”
Liam M Flood
, FRCS, FRCSI, in the Journal of Laryngology & Otology (2021)

"Edited and authored by experts from a wide score of pediatricians and professionals, this is an excellent work that gives insight about everything professionals need to know about CHARGE syndrome in one book. Therefore, it is a must-have clinical reference book for specialists who are involved in the care of individuals with CHARGE. It allows a quick grasp of the essential points for multidisciplinary collaboration to provide appropriate evaluations, referrals, guidance, and treatment for individuals with CHARGE. I would also recommend this book to family members of individuals with CHARGE syndrome for educational and counseling purposes, to help parents understand the long-term health consequences of the syndrome and the steps they can take to help their child. The editors have done a great job crossing the barriers among these professionals in order for the book to serve as a professional and parental educational resource. In conclusion, thanks to the editors and the authors for an invaluable text to professionals, parents, and educators."
Wafaa Kaf, MD, PhD
Communication Sciences and Disorders Department, Missouri State University, in the International Journal of Audiology (Review of first edition, 2012)

“This book, written by three distinguished experts serves as a compendium that addresses all of the sensory, developmental, speech-related, and psychosocial issues as well as the medical issues that are important for managing a child with CHARGE syndrome. Major hearing, vision, communication, airway, and feeding issues that have a significant impact on the growth and development of such individuals are addressed extensively. Part 4 covers the language
development and communication system in a very simplified manner which aids in understanding the communication challenges these patients may face when connecting with others. A chapter on the “changes over the life cycle” aptly explains the physical influences on the development and changes in the medical requirements at various ages. As a quick guide, an appendix covering health supervision throughout the lifespan is included. A chapter on educational issues and a checklist on educational use are both noteworthy additions. The addition of drawings, clinical pictures, and tables allows for a better understanding of specific aspects.
This book can be a valuable resource for families, health care providers, early interventionists, and special educators who are dealing with the various manifestations of CHARGE syndrome throughout their lives. I'd like to thank the authors for bringing up this comprehensive book
on CHARGE syndrome.”
