Snoring, the lay term for noisy breathing during sleep, has historically been believed to be just a nocturnal nuisance and one of the most obnoxious of human habits. In a middle-aged population 20% of men and 5% of women will snore. By age 60 the number of habitual snorers will triple! Epidemiological studies have shown however that up to 50% of snorers do not just have simple snoring, but rather also have some form of pathological sleep disruption. Snoring may be a simple nuisance to the patient or sleep partner when not accompanied by other symptoms or complaints. However, it may just as likely be part of a symptom complex indicating a disease of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Sleep-disordered breathing is a spectrum of diseases related to decreased airflow through the upper airway during sleep, due either to complete or partial upper airway obstruction or increased upper airway resistance.

Authors

Kenny P. Pang

Kenny P. Pang, FRCSEd, FRCSI, is director and consultant at the Asia Sleep Centre, Ear Nose and Throat. He graduated from the National University of Singapore Faculty of Medicine and attained his surgical fellowship exams in general surgery and otorhinolaryngology from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh and Ireland) in 1999 and 2002, respectively. He also obtained his masters of medicine (otorhinolaryngology) in 2001. Dr. Pang completed his sleep surgery and sleep medicine fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia. He is chief editor of the International Sleep Surgery Society and is a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He has published and authored more than 30 articles and book chapters, and has been a speaker in more than 40 sleep surgery courses internationally. Dr Pang conducts his own successful Singapore Sleep Surgery Courses, and pioneered the Expansion Sphincter Pharyngoplasty and the Anterior Palatoplasty.

Brian Rotenberg

Brian Rotenberg, MD, MPH, FRCSC, is an associate professor of OtolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery at Western University (London, Canada) and director of the Sleep Surgery Program at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is dual fellowship trained in sinonasal surgery and pediatric surgery, and joined the faculty at Western University in 2007. He is a founding member and co-chief editor of the International Surgical Sleep Society. Dr. Rotenberg is the chair of the Sleep Apnea Interest Group at the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology, and is also involved in panel work on sleep apnea with the American Rhinological Society. He has been an invited speaker internationally on topics relating to sleep apnea and rhinology, and has more than 40 peer reviewed publications as well as funded research grants to study sleep and sinonasal research. Dr. Rotenberg is a medical consultant for guideline publications relating to perioperative management of apneic patients, and is also a consultant for various industry partners working on innovative surgical devices for treatment of apnea and snoring. His research interests include establishing evidence-based perioperative outcomes assessments for sleep apnea and diagnosing sleep disorders via computer modeling.
