Children with an inability to express or understand language are a diverse group but all can learn with SMILE, a multisensory program that teaches speech, reading and writing in an integrated way. It begins with attention-getting exercises, introduces phonemes and progresses to the development of short stories. SMILE provides the strategies and materials to give children with severe language-learning problems a chance to learn at their own pace consistently achieving manageable goals. SMILE allows teachers, speech-language pathologists and parents to be on the same page, using a truly practical program with proved results.

ABOUT THE SET
SMILE is a step-by-step multisensory program, based in the Association Method. It teaches spoken and written production of sounds, sound and word recognition, reading and writing, in an integrated way.

SMILE teaches habits of attention and imitation with its scope and sequence ranging from basic attending skills to the use of language in a descriptive and conversational manner. It covers the five areas needed for reading success. SMILE procedures can be readily learned by speech-language pathologists, reading specialists and regular and special education teachers. Preferably all staff will work in a synergistic manner giving the pupils the best chance for success.

Problems with literacy are an issue in special education among a variety of pupils. SMILE was developed to benefit pupils exhibiting challenges with speech, language and literacy development including pupils labeled:

  • Deaf
  • Hard of Hearing
  • Autistic
  • Brain Injured
  • Mentally handicapped
At the present time this issue is compounded by the fact that many handicapped children are included in regular-education classes where teachers generally do not have the special training to teach them either speech or reading.

The 5 SMILE Modules include skills listed in the following order:
  1. Attention getting
  2. Phonemic awareness
  3. Sound-letter knowledge
  4. Auditory and visual discrimination
  5. Sound and letter sequencing
  6. Word recognition
  7. Word building by syllable
  8. Development of picture / word association
  9. Transition to short sentences
  10. Development of concept stories
The program is multisensory and personalized which is one of the reasons that pupils with severe language and literacy problems achieve more with it than with other methods.

LANGUAGE MODULE 1
  • Attention-getting activities
  • Beginning teaching of phonemes— sounds and letters
  • Consonant-vowel combinations
LANGUAGE MODULE 2
  • Uses a six-step procedure to teachs 50 nouns by a process called cross drills. Cross drills lead to words which are reinforced by saying, reading and writing as well as associating them with objects and pictures.
LANGUAGE MODULE 3
  • When a pupil has learned approximately 50 nouns, teaching of verbs, numbers, colors and plurals begins. Verbs are initially taught using stick figures to clarify that it is the action and not additional features such as clothing that is the target skill.
LANGUAGE MODULE 4
  • This module teaches simple sentences followed by the appropriate question to elicit the sentence.
LANGUAGE MODULE 5
  • Using previous learned skills, this module develops description stories including questions and answers.
