ABOUT THE EDITORS AND ASSOCIATE EDITORS
Marvin P. Fried, M.D., F.A.C.S., is a New York native, and graduate of City College of New York 1965. He received the New York City Jonas Salk Award and Scholarship from New York City College. He graduated Tufts University School of Medicine in 1969, followed by training in Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine, where he also served as a Fellow of the National Institute of Neurologic Disease and Stroke. After serving in the United States Public Health Service in Norfolk, Virginia at the rank of Surgeon (Commander), his first faculty appointment was at Boston University School of Medicine and Tufts University School of Medicine. In 1979, he joined the Harvard Medical School faculty, being promoted ultimately to Professor of Otology and Laryngology in 1997. He served as Chief of the Divisions of Otolaryngology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Co-Director of the Head and Neck Oncology Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In 1999, he became Professor of Otolaryngology and University Chairman, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center. He also has served as the Program Director for the Otolaryngology Residency Program at Harvard Medical Center, and now at AECOM.
His awards include first place award for Basic Research in Otolaryngology as a Resident from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology (1975), the Edmund Prince Fowler Award for Basic Science Research from the American Laryngological, Rhinological, and Otological Society (Triologic Society) 1984, the Honor Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery 1988, and the Mark Award for Contributions to the Advancement of Laser Medicine and Surgery in 1994 from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He received the Medal of the City of Paris in 1987 for the First International Medical Symposium offered by Harvard Medical School. He has been listed in the Best Doctors in America; Best Doctors in New York (Castle Connolly Medical LTD), as well as in "New York’s Top 100 Minimally Invasive Surgeons," and "New York’s Best Doctors" (
New York Magazine).
Dr. Fried has had numerous national positions, including member of the Audit Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, as well as Chairman of its Laser Safety Committee. He has been President of the Society of University Otolaryngologists-Head and Neck Surgeons, and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. He is Secretary of the American Rhinologic Society, and the American Laryngological Association. He has also served on numerous committees for other organizations, such as, the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Broncho-Esophagological Association.

His research interests have been and remain in the realm of technical applications for the improvement of surgery as it relates to disorders of the head and neck. This has included laser applications and safety, computer-assisted and image-guided surgery, and surgical simulation. He has been the principal investigator on grants issues by the Department of Defense, as well as current investigator from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
His research contributions have included investigations onto safe laser practices for disorders of the head and neck, investigations into microvascular reconstruction, including laser tissue welding, image guidance for photothermal treatment with lasers, and virtual endoscopy. He is currently investigating the use of sophisticated surgical simulation for training of residents and physicians for endoscopic sinus surgery and its relationship to the improvement of patient safety. He has authored over 150 original reports, reviews, and chapters, as well as books and monographs. He has been the Senior Editor of two editions of a definitive textbook on laryngeal disorders.
Alfio Ferlito, M.D., D.L.O., D.Path., F.R.C.Ed. ad hominem, F.R.C.S. (Engl, Glasg, Ir) ad eundem, F.D.S.R.C.S. ad eundem, F.A.C.S., F.H.K.C.O.R.L., F.R.C.Path., F.A.S.C.P., M.C.A.P., F.R.S.M., is Director of the Department of Surgical Sciences, Professor and Chairman of the ENT Clinic at the University of Udine School of Medicine.
He graduated in medicine at the University of Bologna. After two years at the University of Trieste, he worked at the ENT Department of Padua University from 1970 to 1997.
He has collaborated in writing articles, editorials, commentaries, letters to the editor, special issues, book chapters and books with 323 international experts.
He has already edited a three-volume book entitled
Cancer of the Larynx (CRC Press, Boca Raton, 1985) and three other books entitled
Neoplasms of the Larynx (Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh, 1993),
Surgical Pathology of Laryngeal Neoplasms (Chapman and Hall, London, 1996) and
Diseases of the Larynx (Arnold, London, 2000), and co-authored two books entitled
Granulomas and Neoplasms of the Larynx (Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh, 1988) and
Surgery for Cancer of the Larynx and Related Structures together with Doctor Carl E. Silver (Saunders, Philadelphia, 1996). He is editor with Doctor Marvin P. Fried of the forthcoming third edition of the book entitled The Larynx (Plural Publishing). He has been the author or co-author of 383 refereed publications in 46 medical journals and 48 chapters in various books.

He collaborated as a member of the World Health Organization’s Committee on Histological Typing of Tumours of the Upper Respiratory Tract and Ear. He is also a member of the Laryngeal Cancer Association’s Committee on the Classification of Laryngeal Cancer. He was consultant to Yale University.
He has delivered prestigious lectures all over the world. Recently he gave the 2nd Morrison Lecture in San Francisco (2006) and the 19th Som Lecture in New York (2006).
He has shared his professional life in clinical practice, teaching and research.
One of his chief interests is the promotion of international cooperation in head and neck surgery, oncology and cancer research.
Alessandra Rinaldo, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.R.S.M. is Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology in the Department of Surgical Sciences, ENT Clinic, at the University of Udine School of Medicine. She graduated in medicine at the University of Padua where she also did her residency in Otolaryngology through the mentorship of Alfio Ferlito. She has authored 214 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 14 book chapters. She has collaborated with 147 international experts and published in 15 medical impacted journals. She is Associate Editor with Doctor Richard V. Smith of the forthcoming third edition of the book entitled The Larynx (by Fried MP, Ferlito A, eds. Plural Publishing, San Diego).

Richard V. Smith, M.D., F.A.C.S., is Associate Professor and Vice-Chairman, Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center.
A New York native, Dr. Smith received his undergraduate training at Middlebury College, in Vermont and graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1990, followed by training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Georgetown Hospital and School of Medicine in Washington, DC. Following his residency, he joined the faculty of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he has served as the Chief of the Division of Otolaryngology at the North Central Bronx Hospital, Co-Director of the Head and Neck Service at Montefiore, serving as Director since 2005, and the Interim Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center prior to the arrival of Dr. Marvin P. Fried.
His awards include the Byers Award for the best clinical research from the American Head and Neck Society in 2003, the Honor Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2001, the Recent Alumni Award from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 2000, and a combined academic and athletic scholarship from the town of Ridgefield CT from 1980-1984 for Undergraduate Studies at Middlebury College. He has also received the Teacher of the Year award from the Department of Otolaryngology in 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2003. He has served on numerous regional and national society committees and boards. He has been the Chair of the Residents and Fellows in Training Committee and the Young Physicians Committee for the Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, as well as serving on their Board of Directors and several educational committees. He has served on the Executive Committee of the New York Head and Neck Society since 2000. He is an active member of 11 societies, serving on many committees within these organizations. He also serves as the Chair of the Cancer Committee at Montefiore, is on the Executive Committee for Translational Research in the Albert Einstein Cancer Center, as well as other hospital and cancer center committees.
Dr. Smith is a reviewer for the
Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head and
Neck Surgery, and Head and Neck.
His research interests are in Head and Neck Oncology. He is involved in translational and basic research in genomic, proteomic, and methylation changes in head and neck cancer, and he is a Co-Director of the Upper Aerodigestive Tract Research group at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has additional clinical research efforts in swallowing disorders in head and neck cancer patients, particularly following organ preservation therapy, robotic and endscopic surgery for head and neck cancer, and needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid and salivary tumors. He has authored over 50 original reports, reviews, and chapters. He is an Associate Editor for the third edition of
The Larynx, edited by Drs. Fried and Ferlito, and is a co-editor for the second edition of
Complications in Head and Neck Surgery.
